BOB
MARLEY
When Bob Marley passed away in
Miami in 1981, aged just 36, the world lost the first international reggae
superstar and (still) the most popular reggae artist ever. Combining brilliant
pop melodies with frequently politically charged lyrics, Bob Marley and his
legendary band The Wailers produced a string of reggae masterpieces that will
forever see their creators regarded as iconic ambassadors of Jamaican popular
culture. My pop art painting of Bob Marley is lovingly based on the sleeve shot
of Kaya - one of these timeless
recordings, released to typically great acclaim in 1978. Other vintage Bob
Marley and The Wailers recordings include Catch
A Fire, Exodus, Survival
and Uprising, but an excellent introduction for the initiated is the
perennially bestselling greatest hits collection, Legend. If you only ever buy one reggae album, you could get nothing
better than the late, great Bob Marley!
Bob
Marley Trivia: The classic Bob Marley
song One Love is virtually an
alternative Jamaican national anthem, especially since it was adopted by the
Jamaica Tourist Board to promote the country in TV adverts.
