KURT
COBAIN
When Kurt Cobain committed
suicide on April 5th 1994, there was an outpouring of grief from rock
fans the world over, not seen on such a scale since the murder of John Lennon 14
years previously. A deeply troubled young man who found himself press-tagged as
‘spokesman for a generation’ through his band Nirvana’s timely melding of
punk rock and heavy metal to pop melody, Kurt Cobain was unable to cope with
fame, adoration, media persecution and drug addiction, so ending his life in
desperation. But Kurt Cobain and Nirvana’s legacy remains, with the classic Nevermind
album and lead single Smells Like Teen
Spirit amongst the most important rock music ever created. Sadly, perhaps -
yet deservedly in recognition of his awesome talents as a songwriter, singer and
musician - Kurt Cobain has indeed become the iconic figurehead for a disaffected
generation he so wished against, remaining as popular and vital now as he ever
was during his brief career.
Kurt
Cobain Trivia: Frances Bean – the
daughter Kurt Cobain had with Hole rocker Courtney Love – was apparently
so-named because the unborn girl looked like a bean on an ultrasound scan!
